The situation

A Kelowna homeowner with a tired bathroom — dated vinyl flooring over a softening subfloor, a shower with failing grout and outdated tile, and storage built for a different decade. The client wanted a clean, modern bathroom with a fully waterproofed shower, a built-in niche for bottles, and tile large enough that the grid read as a calm field instead of a busy pattern.

What we did

Full gut to the studs. We hauled out the old vinyl and pulled the subfloor back to check the joists — no rot, but the original substrate was under-specced for a tile finish, so we added a layer of plywood and bonded in a floor membrane system to decouple the tile from any future movement.

The shower got a complete waterproofing build: cement backer board on every wet wall, a liquid-applied membrane over every seam and corner, a sloped mud bed to the drain, and a framed niche that was waterproofed integrally with the wall — no after-the-fact cut-in. We dry-laid the large-format porcelain before the thinset went down to plan the grid, then set each tile with full back-butter coverage and levelling clips on every seam so the finished surface reads flat from any angle.

The result

A bathroom that will outlast the house it's in. Waterproofing is sealed from the subfloor up through every corner of the shower. The tile field is tight, level, and calm. The niche is the feature detail it deserves to be. Before-and-after, it's a different room.

Questions homeowners ask

What does a full bathroom renovation cost in Kelowna?

Full bathroom renovations in Kelowna typically land between $18,000 and $45,000+ depending on scope — how much plumbing moves, tile selection, vanity and fixture quality, and whether the shower gets a custom tiled enclosure versus a prefab pan. A studs-out reno with large-format tile, a waterproofed shower with a built-in niche, and mid-range fixtures is usually in the $28,000–$38,000 range. We quote every bathroom line-by-line so you can see exactly where the budget goes.

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

A typical full bathroom reno takes three to four weeks from demo day to the final clean. The phases are: demo and rough plumbing (3–5 days), framing and waterproofing (3–4 days), tile work (5–8 days including cure time), then fixtures, glass, trim, and finishes (4–6 days). We schedule trades tightly so nothing sits idle, and we clean the space at the end of every day — you can keep living in the rest of the house while we work.

Do you handle the waterproofing yourselves or subcontract it?

We do waterproofing in-house as part of the build. Shower waterproofing is the single most critical detail in a bathroom reno — a missed corner or taped seam becomes a $20,000 leak behind the wall five years later. Every wet wall gets a full waterproof membrane system (Schluter Kerdi, Laticrete Hydro Ban, or equivalent depending on scope), every corner is sealed, every penetration is boot-flashed. The niche is framed and waterproofed integrally with the shower — not cut in after the fact.

Can I keep my existing layout or does everything need to move?

Keeping the existing plumbing layout saves meaningful cost. If your current layout works for how you use the space, we can upgrade every finish, add a niche, reshape the shower, and swap the vanity without moving drains or supply lines. If the layout has to change — moving the toilet, expanding the shower footprint — we handle the re-plumb and any subfloor or joist work. The first site visit is where we figure out the cost delta between the two paths.
